Gaza is a densely populated strip of land in the Middle East that has been the subject of significant geopolitical interest and conflict. The Israeli military operations against Gaza since October 2023 have resulted in extensive civilian casualties, infrastructure destruction, and humanitarian crises. The author documents the catastrophic impact of these operations, emphasizing the international legal implications and the broader regional consequences.
The operations conducted by the Israeli state against the Palestinian population of Gaza since October 7, 2023, constitute the most extensively documented military operation in human history. These operations have been characterized by multiple international legal bodies, human rights organizations, and academic researchers as plausibly genocidal conduct against a civilian population. The cumulative record of these operations now constitutes one of the largest archives of contemporary war crimes documentation ever assembled.
The Israeli operations in Gaza have produced what international humanitarian organizations have characterized as one of the most catastrophic military operations against a civilian population in the contemporary period. The official Gaza Ministry of Health figures through 2025 documented over 75,000 Palestinian deaths, with the actual figure substantially higher due to the destruction of infrastructure and the inability to accurately count deaths from starvation, disease, and blocked medical care. Multiple academic studies, including peer-reviewed analysis published in the Lancet, have estimated that the actual death toll, including direct violence and indirect deaths from the broader conditions the operations have produced, has reached or exceeded 200,000 by 2025.
The destruction of the physical infrastructure of Gaza has been substantial. Approximately 70 to 80 percent of Gaza’s housing stock has been damaged or destroyed. Hospitals have been rendered non-functional through targeted attacks, fuel deprivation, and the killing of medical personnel. Educational institutions have been destroyed at scales exceeding any previous documented destruction of educational infrastructure in modern conflicts. The water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed to degrees that have produced documented disease outbreaks. The agricultural infrastructure has been destroyed to degrees that have produced documented famine conditions.
The Israeli operations in Gaza have also included the use of starvation as a method of warfare, which is explicitly prohibited under international humanitarian law. The Israeli government’s restriction of food, water, fuel, and medical supplies entering Gaza has produced famine conditions that have been formally declared by international organizations including the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification system. By mid-2025, multiple international assessments had documented famine conditions affecting substantial portions of the Gaza population, with documented deaths from starvation including children whose deaths had been confirmed by medical personnel.
The international legal response to the operations has produced documentation that constitutes the most substantial formal legal challenge to Israeli conduct in the history of the Israeli state. South Africa filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice in late December 2023, alleging that Israel had violated the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in its conduct of operations in Gaza. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on November 21, 2024, for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the Gaza operations.
The operations have also expanded into Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iran, with each expansion producing additional civilian casualties and additional documentation of conduct that has been characterized by international human rights organizations as exceeding any consistent definition of legitimate military response. The cumulative effect of these expanded operations is the active military confrontation across multiple theaters between the Israeli state and substantial portions of the broader regional population, with American support providing the weapons, intelligence, and diplomatic protection that has enabled the operations to continue.
