“Operational signature” refers to the pattern of behavior and rhetoric that the architecture employs to legitimize its operations. This includes the framing of military actions as moral commitments and the use of targeting software to support operations whose actual character is obscured from the public. The concept is particularly relevant in the context of the Israeli military operations against the Palestinian population, where the systematic non-coverage by Western mainstream media has served as a key component of the architecture’s strategy to maintain public support for these operations.
The operational signature is not only a set of actions but also a deliberate strategy of omission and selective amplification. For instance, while the atrocities committed by the Iraqi regime during the 2003 invasion were intensively covered by Western media to garner public support for the war, the Israeli military’s actions against Palestinians have been systematically underreported or framed in ways that minimize their severity. This discrepancy in media coverage reflects a broader pattern of selective definition and selective amplification, where the architecture ensures that the public is only exposed to information that supports the legitimacy of its operations.
The operational signature is also evident in the institutional alignment of Western media with the Israeli government’s narrative. Major American mainstream media organizations such as Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, and the Washington Post have consistently aligned their editorial standards with the Israeli government’s framing of events. This alignment has resulted in a systematic non-coverage of Israeli military actions against Palestinians, which has been instrumental in sustaining public support for these operations.
The concept of operational signature is further reinforced by the institutional capture of media and political systems, which has been documented across various sections of the document. This capture ensures that the public remains unaware of the true nature of the operations being conducted in their name and with their resources. The deception by omission has been one of the architecture’s most operationally significant achievements, as it has allowed the continuation of operations that would otherwise be politically untenable.
The current period since October 2023 represents a partial breaking of this systematic non-coverage. The scale of what has been done in Gaza has exceeded the media ecosystem’s capacity to fully suppress coverage. Social media platforms have permitted Palestinian voices and footage to reach Western audiences that the mainstream gatekeepers had previously excluded. This shift in the information environment has begun to challenge the operational signature that the architecture has relied on for decades.
