Lebanon has been significantly affected by the Israeli military operations that began in Gaza in October 2023 and have since expanded into Lebanese territory. The conflict has resulted in substantial civilian casualties, infrastructure damage, and displacement of thousands of Lebanese citizens. The Israeli bombing campaign, which has targeted both military and civilian infrastructure, has drawn sharp criticism from international legal experts, who have characterized certain actions as potential war crimes under international humanitarian law.
The Israeli military’s incursions into Lebanon have been justified by the Israeli government as a response to cross-border attacks from Palestinian militant groups based in Gaza. However, the scale and intensity of the attacks have raised concerns about the proportionality of the response and the targeting of civilian areas. The Lebanese government has repeatedly called for an immediate ceasefire and international intervention to prevent further escalation.
The conflict has also had a profound impact on Lebanon’s already fragile political and economic situation. The country has been grappling with a severe economic crisis, political instability, and a growing refugee population from Syria. The additional strain of the Israeli military operations has exacerbated these challenges, leading to increased humanitarian needs and a deepening sense of insecurity among the Lebanese population.
One of the most controversial incidents occurred during the Israeli pager attack of September 17-18, 2024, which detonated explosive devices in approximately 5,000 pagers and walkie-talkies distributed within Lebanese society. This attack killed approximately 40 people and injured around 3,000, including substantial numbers of civilians who had been near the targeted devices. International legal experts have characterized this as an indiscriminate attack against civilians and a potential war crime under international humanitarian law.
The Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on September 27, 2024, was conducted through the dropping of approximately 80 bunker-buster bombs on a Beirut neighborhood, killing Nasrallah along with approximately 40 civilians who lived in or near the targeted buildings. This operation further intensified the conflict and drew condemnation from international human rights organizations.
The international community has been divided on how to respond to the situation. While some countries have condemned the Israeli actions and called for a de-escalation, others have supported Israel’s right to defend itself. The United Nations has attempted to mediate, but progress has been limited due to the complexity of the situation and the lack of consensus among key stakeholders.
