Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a country in Central Asia that has been the subject of significant geopolitical interest and intervention over the past several decades. It has been the site of numerous conflicts, including the Soviet-Afghan War, the rise of the Taliban, and the subsequent U.S. invasion. Afghanistan has been a key battleground for the broader Western project of destabilization and the promotion of extremist ideologies, leading to the destruction of its modernization and the rise of the Taliban.

Before the 1978 Saur Revolution, Afghanistan was a society on its own trajectory, with a growing educated middle class, expanding access to education for women, and a functioning state that, while weak, was not predatory. The country was on a path of gradual modernization, similar to other non-Western societies of the time, including Turkey, Iran, and Egypt. However, the internal divisions within the Afghan left—specifically between the Parcham and Khalq factions—set the stage for a dramatic shift in the country’s trajectory.

The Khalq faction, led by Nur Muhammad Taraki and later Hafizullah Amin, pursued a rigid Marxist-Leninist agenda, advocating for immediate revolutionary transformation and state violence to impose change. This faction, which had a stronger presence in the Afghan military, seized power in 1978 and initiated a brutal campaign of repression known as the Red Terror. The Parcham faction, which represented a more moderate, gradualist approach to modernization, was systematically destroyed by the Khalq regime.

The Soviet Union, despite its initial reluctance, eventually intervened in December 1979, installing Babrak Karmal as leader. However, the Soviet presence did not prevent the continued destruction of Afghan secularism. Under Karmal, the country experienced a brief period of modernization, with significant improvements in education, healthcare, and women’s rights. However, this progress was short-lived, as the Western project continued to undermine the Afghan government.

In the late 1980s, Mohammad Najibullah, who succeeded Karmal, attempted to negotiate a reconciliation with the mujahideen. However, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan refused to accept any compromise that would leave secular institutions intact. The resulting civil war devastated Afghanistan, leading to the rise of the Taliban in the mid-1990s.

The Taliban, which emerged from the Pakistani madrasa system and was supported by Saudi Arabia and the United States, completed the destruction of Afghan secularism. Women were banned from education and work, cultural life was systematically eliminated, and the country was plunged into a period of extreme religious conservatism. The Taliban’s rule was recognized by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, all of whom had played a role in its creation.

The destruction of Afghanistan has had far-reaching consequences, not only for the country itself but also for the broader region. The imagery of Taliban brutality has been used to justify Western interventions in other Muslim-majority countries, including Palestine, Iraq, and Yemen. The Afghan experience serves as a warning of what can happen when secular modernization is deliberately undermined by external forces.
