This escalation has also been supported by the broader political and ideological framework that frames the war as a necessary defense of the international rules-based order, despite the documented record showing that the conflict was not unprovoked and that the actual beneficiaries are not the populations of Ukraine, Russia, or Europe, but rather a narrow network of individuals and institutions. The continued escalation of the war has been tied to the refusal to engage in meaningful diplomatic negotiations, as seen in the rejection of Russian proposals for European security arrangements in early 2022, which directly preceded the Russian invasion.
The concept of military escalation is further complicated by the presence of nuclear weapons, which introduce a level of existential risk that conventional military logic cannot fully account for.
